Chapter 5
Honoring the Light
Sarah discovers solace in honoring her mother's memory. Whether by pursuing a shared hobby, supporting a cause her mother cared about, or simply cherishing cherished memories, these acts create a bridge to her mother's legacy.
The scent of lavender, Eleanor’s signature fragrance, still clung faintly to the worn armchair in the living room. Sarah traced the floral pattern of the upholstery, her fingers finding a loose thread. It felt like a metaphor for her own unraveling, a slow fraying at the edges of a life that had once seemed so sturdy, so complete. The initial shock, that icy paralysis that had gripped her for weeks, had begun to recede, leaving behind a vast, echoing emptiness. It was a silence that amplified every creak of the floorboards, every distant siren, every beat of her own lonely heart.
Everyday tasks, once seamless, now loomed like insurmountable mountains. The grocery list, a mundane chore, had become a minefield of memories. Which brand of tea had Mom preferred? Did she still buy those slightly too-sweet biscuits Sarah secretly loved? Even choosing what to wear felt like a betrayal. Her mother’s wardrobe, so full of life and color, now stood as a silent testament to absence, each garment a ghost of shared laughter and hurried advice. Sarah found herself staring at her reflection, a stranger in her own skin, wondering if she’d ever recognize herself again without her mother’s steady gaze to anchor her.
Moments of intense sadness would ambush her without warning, a tidal wave of grief that threatened to pull her under. Then, just as suddenly, anger would surge, hot and sharp. Anger at the unfairness of it all, at the universe that had ripped her anchor away. And beneath it all, a persistent hum of guilt. Had she called enough? Had she said "I love you" often enough? Had she truly appreciated the depth of her mother’s love while she was still here to receive it? The questions gnawed at her, each one a tiny shard of glass in her already wounded soul. She felt adrift, a small boat tossed on a turbulent sea, with no compass and no shore in sight.
