The fluorescent lights of the community center hummed with an almost aggressive cheerfulness, a stark contrast to the heavy quiet that had settled over Sarah’s life. David had gently, persistently, nudged her towards this place, the “Bereavement Support Circle,” a title that felt both clinical and impossibly gentle. She’d resisted, of course. How could anyone understand the cavernous space her mother had left behind? It wasn't just a missing person; it was a missing compass, a silent phone, a future unwritten.

She sat on the edge of a plastic chair, clutching her worn canvas bag as if it were a life raft. Around her, a scattering of faces, etched with a similar weary fragility, settled into more comfortable chairs. She spoke of her husband, of the suddenness of his passing, of the mundane things that still caught her off guard – the empty space beside her in bed, the way his favorite mug sat on the shelf, untouched. Sarah listened, a strange tension easing in her chest. Carol’s words weren’t a cure, they were a mirror. The emptiness Carol described, the phantom limbs of a life shared, resonated with a truth Sarah had felt but couldn't articulate.
