The chill of the late afternoon air still clung to my skin, a phantom shiver that had nothing to do with the dropping temperature. Ten years old. That’s all I was. Ten years old and already a veteran of the rooftop wars. This time, it wasn't a game. It was a foolish, impulsive climb, a desperate attempt to retrieve a stray baseball that had sailed beyond my reach. The ball, a scuffed and worn sphere, sat mockingly on the peak of our small, pitched roof, a tiny beacon of my own making. I’d scaled the drainpipe, my small hands finding purchase on the rusted metal, my sneakers scrabbling against the aged shingles. The world from up there was a skewed perspective, familiar houses rendered miniature, the street a ribbon of gray.

But the descent was proving more challenging than the ascent. My hands, slick with a nervous sweat, lost their grip. A yelp, a frantic scrabble, and then the sickening lurch of falling. Time seemed to stretch, each fraction of a second an eternity of regret and fear. I braced for the impact, the sharp, unforgiving kiss of the ground.

Then, a blur. A flash of movement. A voice, sharp and urgent, cutting through the panicked silence. "No!"
