Chapter 6
The Price of Truth
Facing the demon lord, Bishop Dark is presented with a brutal choice. His orders are clear: kill the orchestrator of the chaos and fulfill his contract. But the possibility of finding Talia, of uncovering the truth behind her disappearance, gnaws at him. This choice pits his loyalty to the Church against his deepest personal motivations. He must decide if he will be a mere instrument of divine justice or risk everything, including his soul, for a chance to save his sister.
The air in the demon lord’s sanctum tasted like old blood and desperation. Bishop Dark stood, a shadow against the flickering infernal light, his grip tight on the hilt of his consecrated blade. Before him, the demon lord, a hulking brute of obsidian scales and eyes that burned with ancient malice, lounged on a throne carved from the petrified screams of his victims. But loose ends were Bishop Dark’s specialty. He’d been forged in them, sharpened by them. And the biggest loose end, the gaping wound in his soul, was Talia. His sister. Gone for five years, a whisper in the wind, a ghost in his dreams. And now, the whispers were growing louder. Sarai’s cryptic pronouncements, the unsettling patterns in the recent surge of demonic activity, the chilling coincidences… they all pointed to something far larger than a rogue vampire nest. They pointed, impossibly, towards her.
“You hesitate, hunter,” the demon lord rumbled, his voice like grinding stones. “The Church sends a stray dog to do its dirty work, and the dog finds itself caught between the leash and the scent of a forgotten bone.”
