The stench of brimstone and desperation clung to Bishop Dark like a cheap whore’s perfume. He’d followed the trail of drained husks and terrified whispers to this forsaken corner of the city, a labyrinth of crumbling tenements where shadows seemed to breed like vermin. It was always like this. A town would start to buzz with unease, then a few missing folk, a frantic plea to the Church, and suddenly Bishop Dark was being dispatched with a half-hearted blessing and a prayer they wouldn’t have to write his obituary too soon.

He took a long pull from the flask tucked deep in his coat, the cheap rotgut burning a familiar path down his throat. “Fucking vampires,” he muttered, the words a low growl. “Can’t they just stick to biting necks and looking brooding? No, gotta escalate. Gotta be a whole nest, gotta be preying on innocents. Makes my job too damn easy, and that’s never a good sign.”

A flicker of movement in the periphery. Sister Petra. Of course. She was always a flicker, a ghost in his periphery, sent by Abbott Kale to observe, to document, to judge. He didn’t hate her being there, not really. She was a quiet presence, a stark contrast to the chaos he usually waded through. And she was… soft. So incredibly soft. A stark, sweet counterpoint to the rough edges of his existence. He’d found her huddled in a darkened alcove, shivering from the night air, and the instinct to protect, a rare and fragile thing, had flared. That had led to the whispered confessions, the shared warmth against the cold, the illicit solace found in the hushed confines of a forgotten church annex. He washed her, every time, a ritual that felt more like penance than pleasure, a desperate attempt to cleanse himself of the filth he collected, of the sins he committed. She was precious, a delicate bloom in a poisoned garden. And he knew, with a certainty that gnawed at his gut, that it couldn’t last.
