Chapter 18
Sacrifice and Salvation
The path to saving Talia from a horrifying demonic ritual is laid bare, but it demands an unthinkable sacrifice from Bishop Dark. The choice weighs his very soul against his sister's life, a battle that challenges the core of his being. He must surrender something precious, something that defines him, to rescue the one person who still represents hope in his dark world. The ritual's completion hinges on his willingness to pay the ultimate price.
The air in the ancient, stone-walled chamber tasted of dust and despair. Bishop Dark, his knuckles white where he gripped the hilt of his consecrated blade, felt the familiar prickle of dread, a cold serpent coiling in his gut. This was it. The heart of the beast, the nexus of the darkness that had swallowed his sister whole five years ago. The scent of brimstone was thicker here, clinging to the sweat on his brow, a cloying perfume of damnation. Before him, etched into the very floor, was a sigil that pulsed with a sickly, violet light, a geometric nightmare designed to tear holes between worlds. And in the center of it, bound by chains that glowed with an unholy heat, was Talia.
She looked… different. Thinner, yes, her familiar spark dulled, but her eyes, those wide, innocent eyes he remembered so clearly, held a terrifying awareness. A flicker of recognition, then a shadow of fear, crossed her face as he stepped further into the chamber, the heavy oak door groaning shut behind him. He’d followed the whispers, the fragmented clues, the desperate pleas of Sarai, all leading him to this forgotten sanctuary, a place the Church had long since written off as a myth.
“Talia,” he rasped, the name a rough caress on his tongue. It felt foreign, after so long.
