The scent of old parchment and beeswax, usually a comforting balm to Sister Petra’s senses, now clung to her like a shroud. It was the smell of commitment, of a life irrevocably altered, and lately, it was also the smell of Bishop Dark’s cheap, biting whiskey. She traced the intricate embroidery on the hem of her novice habit, the rough thread a stark contrast to the silk she sometimes imagined slipping between her fingers, a silk that smelled faintly of brimstone and sweat.

The abbess’s chambers were hushed, the air thick with unspoken pronouncements. Elder sisters, their faces etched with years of devotion and, Petra suspected, a fair bit of quiet desperation, sat like statues around a polished oak table. Abbott Kale, his usual weary pragmatism momentarily masked by a flicker of something akin to pity, occupied a seat at the head. And then there was her. Sister Petra, on the precipice of a decision that felt less like a choice and more like a cliff edge.

“Sister Petra,” the abbess’s voice, though soft, resonated with an authority that had settled over Petra’s young shoulders like a heavy cloak. “The time for your final vows is upon you. Have you prayed on this matter? Have you sought divine guidance?”
