The air in the hollow was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a smell Lara had come to associate with a wild, untamed magic that mirrored her own. She navigated the gnarled roots and moss-covered stones of the path leading to Old Man Hemlock’s cabin, her footsteps muffled by the forest floor. The whispers of the woods seemed to follow her, not with malice, but with a kind of knowing curiosity. Each rustle of leaves, each snap of a twig, felt like a conversation she was on the cusp of understanding.

Herbs hung drying from the rafters, their pungent scents mingling with the woodsmoke and the earthy smell of damp soil. Old Man Hemlock sat by the fire, hunched over a wooden table, his gnarled hands moving with surprising dexterity as he worked on some intricate weaving. He looked up as Lara entered, his eyes, the color of faded denim, crinkling at the corners.
