Seeking answers, they visit Mr. Abernathy's antique shop. He cryptically discusses ancient artifacts and forgotten lore, hinting at the Rewop Thing's possible origins.
The bell above the door of "Abernathy's Curiosities" chimed a delicate, almost mournful tune as Eleanor pushed it open. Sarah trailed behind, the scent of old paper, beeswax, and something vaguely metallic clinging to the air. Dust motes danced like tiny fairies in the shafts of sunlight that sliced through the grimy display windows. It was less a shop and more a carefully curated tomb of forgotten things.
“Mom, are you sure about this?” Sarah whispered, her voice tight with a familiar blend of apprehension and exasperation. Her gaze swept over towering stacks of leather-bound books, their spines cracked and faded, and glass cases filled with tarnished jewelry, porcelain dolls with vacant stares, and an assortment of oddities that defied easy categorization.
Eleanor offered a reassuring smile, though her own heart thumped a nervous rhythm against her ribs. “Mr. Abernathy has lived here forever, Sarah. He knows all the old stories, the local lore. If anyone can shed some light on… on the Rewop Thing, it’ll be him.” She smoothed down her sensible cardigan, a gesture of self-soothing. The Rewop Thing had thrown their lives into such delightful, terrifying disarray that the thought of seeking help from an eccentric antique dealer felt strangely… normal.
