Chapter 4
The Symbols' Song

The dusty scent of the attic still clung to them, a phantom perfume of forgotten things and secrets held too long. Back in the familiar, if slightly chaotic, territory of their living room, the Rewop Thing rested on the coffee table, its faint hum a low thrum against the mundane ticking of the grandfather clock. Sarah traced a finger over the cool, metallic surface, her brow furrowed in concentration. Eleanor, perched on the edge of the sofa, leaned closer, her gaze sharp. She’d been trying to shake off the lingering disorientation from their unexpected trip to the dusty annals of the French Revolution. The chilling echo of Madame Guillotine’s pronouncements still seemed to reverberate in the quiet room. She’d always prided herself on her practicality, her grounded approach to life, but the Rewop Thing was a relentless challenge to that very foundation.
