The air in the attic hung thick and still, a forgotten breath trapped between the rafters. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of light piercing the gloom, illuminating the object that had become the axis of their lives: the Rewop Thing. It pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence, a soft violet glow that seemed to hum just beneath the threshold of hearing. Eleanor watched it from the doorway, her arms crossed, a familiar knot of apprehension tightening in her chest. Sarah, perched on an overturned crate, traced a hesitant finger over one of the intricate, alien symbols etched into its metallic surface.

"It’s just… sitting there," Sarah murmured, her voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the quiet. "Not doing anything."

"Yet," Eleanor added, stepping further into the cluttered space. The scent of old wood and forgotten things was a comfort, a stark contrast to the unsettling alienness of the Thing. "It always does something eventually."
