A Friend in Need
Sarah's best friend, Maya, accidentally witnesses the Rewop Thing's activation. Eleanor and Sarah must decide whether to trust her with their extraordinary secret.
The late afternoon sun, usually a warm, honeyed presence filtering through the living room window, seemed to cast a more anxious, pale light today. Sarah chewed on the end of her pen, the plastic smooth and slightly sticky against her teeth. Her history textbook lay open, a battlefield of dates and names that refused to yield their secrets. The chapter on the Industrial Revolution loomed, a monolith of facts she couldn't quite conquer. It wasn't the information itself that was the problem, but the gnawing unease that had settled in her stomach since yesterday’s… incident.
“You’re going to chew through that pen,” Eleanor said, her voice soft but laced with a familiar weariness. She was at the kitchen counter, chopping vegetables with a rhythmic, efficient precision that Sarah envied. Even mundane tasks seemed to possess a certain grace for her mother.
Sarah dropped the pen with a clatter. “Sorry. Just… trying to focus.”
