Chapter 5
A Divergent Path
The magical incident irrevocably alters Modulus. He is no longer just Richard's duplicate; he possesses abilities that set him apart, sparking a new identity.
The air in Richard’s laboratory still hummed with the residual energy of the failed experiment, a faint ozone tang clinging to the polished chrome and whirring machinery. It was a smell Richard had come to associate with both profound disappointment and, lately, a burgeoning sense of awe. He looked at Modulus, or rather, at the figure who had been Modulus, standing now not as a mirror, but as something… else. The transformation had been instantaneous, a blinding flash of emerald light, a sound like a thousand crystal bells shattering, and then silence.
Modulus’s containment armor, usually a sleek, matte-black shell, now pulsed with a subtle, internal luminescence. The vibrant orange kinetic scaffolding lines, once merely decorative conduits of energy, seemed to writhe with a life of their own, shifting and reforming in intricate patterns that defied Richard’s careful calculations. His helmet’s amber visor, usually a solid shield, now flickered with internal light, as if his very thoughts were being projected onto its surface.
“Richard,” Modulus’s voice, still familiar, yet layered with a new resonance, echoed in the lab. It was deeper, richer, carrying a weight that hadn't been there before. “I… I feel different.”
