The humid air of the South clung to Christopher and Felicia like a second skin, heavy with the scent of magnolias and something else, something wild and untamed that mirrored the growing recklessness in their hearts. Cyrus’s words, cryptic and laced with the bitter wisdom of a man who’d seen too much, echoed in their minds. “The South,” he’d rasped, his eyes glinting like chips of obsidian, “has a different rhythm. They’re slower to anger, but when they do, it’s a wildfire.”

They’d traded the stark, unforgiving grids of the Midwest for the winding, verdant arteries of the South. Their methods had evolved, refined by Cyrus’s veiled suggestions and their own desperate ingenuity. No longer were they relying solely on brute force and charm. They’d learned to exploit the subtle cracks in the system, the blind spots in security, the predictable routines of the small-town banks.
