Chapter 7
Southern Scramble
Following Cyrus's veiled tips, they head south, hitting banks with new, more sophisticated methods. They begin to feel the strain, both financially and emotionally, of constant running.
The humid air of the South clung to Christopher and Felicia like a second skin, heavy with the scent of magnolias and something else, something wild and untamed that mirrored the growing recklessness in their hearts. Cyrus’s words, cryptic and laced with the bitter wisdom of a man who’d seen too much, echoed in their minds. “The South,” he’d rasped, his eyes glinting like chips of obsidian, “has a different rhythm. They’re slower to anger, but when they do, it’s a wildfire.”
They’d traded the stark, unforgiving grids of the Midwest for the winding, verdant arteries of the South. Their battered sedan, once a symbol of their desperate escape, now felt like a gilded cage, its every mile a testament to their escalating notoriety. The thrill of the initial heists had begun to fray, replaced by a gnawing unease, a constant hum of anxiety that vibrated just beneath their skin. Money, once a phantom, was now a tangible weight in their duffel bags, but the peace it was supposed to buy remained elusive.
“Another one down,” Felicia murmured, her voice flat as she tossed a crumpled bank wrapper onto the growing pile on the dashboard. The ‘First National Bank of Belle Reve’ was now just another ghost in their wake, its vault a little lighter, its tellers a little more shaken. Their methods had evolved, refined by Cyrus’s veiled suggestions and their own desperate ingenuity. No longer were they relying solely on brute force and charm. They’d learned to exploit the subtle cracks in the system, the blind spots in security, the predictable routines of the small-town banks.
