The cornfields stretched out like an endless, rippling ocean of green, a stark contrast to the concrete canyons they’d left behind. Christopher gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white, as the old pickup truck rumbled along a ribbon of asphalt that seemed to disappear into the hazy horizon. Felicia, beside him, traced patterns on the fogged-up window, her brow furrowed in thought. They were in the heartland now, a place where the whispers of their exploits might travel slower, but the eyes of the locals were just as keen, if not more so.
“Think they’ll even notice us?” Christopher asked, his voice a low rumble. He glanced at Felicia, a nervous energy thrumming beneath his usual charm. The city had been a whirlwind of flashing lights and blaring sirens, a close call that had sent them scrambling, their carefully crafted anonymity shattered. Here, in these quiet, unassuming towns, they hoped to blend in, to become just another transient face in the landscape.
Felicia finally turned from the window, her eyes meeting his. “They’ll notice. They always do. But here, it’s different. Less… frantic. More curious, maybe.” She offered a small, reassuring smile, though a flicker of unease danced in her gaze. The thrill of the chase was intoxicating, but the constant awareness of being hunted was a weight that pressed down on her, heavier with each mile they covered.
