Chapter 16
The Artistic Escape
Felicia, using her hidden artistic talents, devises a plan to disappear. It's a risky strategy, relying on misdirection and a complete reinvention of their identities.
The dust motes danced in the sliver of sunlight that pierced the grimy window of their rented motel room, each a tiny, fleeting star in their dingy universe. Felicia traced the condensation on the glass, her breath clouding the view of the endless, anonymous highway stretching out before them. Another town, another anonymous room, another dawn that promised nothing but more of the same. Christopher was asleep, his face slack and unguarded, a stark contrast to the coiled energy that usually pulsed beneath his skin. She watched him, a familiar ache settling in her chest. He was her wildfire, her tempest, the reason she’d traded the quiet hum of her former life for this roaring, dangerous song. But lately, the song had begun to grate, the melody a little too discordant, the rhythm a little too frantic.
The thrill, the defiance, the sheer living of it all – it had been intoxicating. The quicksilver smiles, the whispered plans, the adrenaline that sang through their veins as they walked out of a bank, pockets heavier and hearts lighter than they had any right to be. They were ghosts in the machine, phantoms of freedom in a world that demanded conformity. But the edges were fraying. The close calls were becoming too close, the narrow escapes too narrow. And the fear, a constant, low hum beneath the surface, was starting to rise, threatening to drown out the music.
Felicia turned from the window, her gaze falling on the battered sketchpad tucked beneath a stack of worn paperbacks. It was her secret, her quiet rebellion. Before Christopher, before the desperation, before the banks, there had been charcoal smudges on her fingers, the scent of turpentine, and the quiet joy of capturing the world on paper. She’d buried it deep, thinking it a luxury they could no longer afford, a weakness in their armor. But as she looked at Christopher, at the weariness etched around his eyes even in sleep, a different kind of spark ignited within her. Not the reckless fire of their heists, but a slow, steady burn of invention.
