It was a Tuesday, which meant Agnes Periwinkle had arrived precisely seventeen minutes early, her pristine white handkerchief already deployed to meticulously wipe down the armrest of her designated chair. Bartholomew ‘Barty’ Bumble, on the other hand, had sauntered in a full ten minutes late, his left hand – the one he claimed was possessed by a mischievous spirit named Clive – already making exploratory passes at the potted fern by the window. Penelope ‘Penny’ Pumpernickel, resplendent in a cerulean cloche hat adorned with a single, strategically placed plastic flamingo, had arrived exactly on time, her eyes darting around the room as if seeking counsel from the very wallpaper.
Dr. Anya Sharma observed the unfolding tableau from behind her desk, her lips curved in a faint, knowing smile. She took a slow sip of her peppermint tea, the steam momentarily obscuring her face. “Good afternoon, everyone,” she said, her voice a low, soothing murmur that Agnes immediately began to catalog for any subtle pitch variations or tonal anomalies.
Agnes offered a curt nod, her gaze fixed on Barty. Clive, it seemed, was already on the move. Barty’s left hand was currently attempting to pilfer a sugar packet from the small tray on Dr. Sharma’s desk. “Bartholomew,” Agnes began, her voice tight with disapproval, “your… appendage… is once again exhibiting a distinct lack of decorum. It’s attempting larceny.”
