The world tilted, then shattered. Lysander, her Lysander, his eyes wide with a terror that mirrored her own, was gone. The sorcerer’s chilling laughter, a sound like splintering ice, echoed in the sudden, profound silence. Florinda stood frozen, her hands outstretched as if she could somehow claw him back from the encroaching darkness. The vibrant clearing, moments before alive with the murmur of birdsong and the gentle hum of bees, was now a void, a gaping wound where Lysander had been.

Grief, a raw, clawing thing, began to unfurl within her. It was a suffocating shroud, heavy with the weight of what had just been ripped away. Tears, hot and stinging, welled in her eyes, blurring the image of the sorcerer’s retreating form, a silhouette against the darkening forest edge. But beneath the crushing sorrow, something else began to stir. It was a molten core of fury, a white-hot rage that seared through the despair. How dare he? How dare he take the one person who had brought light and laughter into her quiet life?

A guttural cry escaped her lips, a sound that was less human and more primal, a wounded animal’s lament. As the sound tore from her throat, a tremor ran through the very ground beneath her feet. The familiar, comforting emerald canopy of the enchanted forest, which had always seemed to hum with a gentle, unseen life, began to writhe. Vines, thick and sinewy, twisted and coiled with unnatural speed, as if responding to a silent command. The air grew heavy, charged with an energy that prickled her skin and made the fine hairs on her arms stand on end.
