The city hummed its low, constant thrum outside my window, a sound I’d long since learned to filter out, like the ticking of my alarm clock or the drone of Mr. Henderson’s voice. But tonight, the hum felt different, alive, a resonant chord vibrating deep within my chest. Elias was here. He’d simply appeared, a silhouette against the sliver of moon hanging in the inky sky, a silent invitation in his posture. I hadn't questioned it, hadn't hesitated. My feet had carried me to the window, my hand reaching out to unlatch it, the cool night air a caress against my skin.

He’d climbed in with a grace that defied the awkwardness of the manoeuvre, a whisper of movement in the dim light of my bedroom. He didn't speak, not at first. He simply stood there, his eyes, dark pools reflecting the faint glow from the streetlights, searching mine. And in that silent communion, something shifted, something profound and irreversible. It wasn’t just the thrill of his presence, the forbidden nature of his visit, or the electric current that always seemed to arc between us. It was deeper, a recognition, a homecoming.

“Anya,” he finally breathed, his voice a low murmur that seemed to weave itself into the very fabric of the night. He reached out, his fingers tracing the line of my jaw, a touch that sent shivers, not of fear, but of pure, unadulterated sensation, down my spine. My breath hitched. Every nerve ending felt acutely alive, tuned to his every gesture, his every scent – a subtle, intoxicating blend of rain-kissed earth and something wild, something ancient.
