The invitation arrived not in an email, nor a text message, but on a small, cream-colored card slipped beneath my apartment door. The ink, a deep, shimmering indigo, felt cool beneath my fingertips as I picked it up. It was Elias, of course. His name, penned in that elegant, slightly archaic script, was all that was needed. No preamble, no pleasantries, just a single line: "Meet me at midnight. The old observatory. Come alone."

My heart did its usual fluttery dance, a mix of exhilaration and a familiar tremor of apprehension. The old observatory. It sat perched on the highest hill overlooking the city, a forgotten sentinel that had always felt more myth than reality to me. Its dome, a skeletal silhouette against the night sky, was a place whispered about in hushed tones, a spot for illicit teenage dares and ghost stories. It was precisely the sort of place I’d always avoided, a beacon of the unknown in my meticulously charted life.

Maya had been vocal about Elias. "He's… intense, Anya," she’d said, her brow furrowed with concern over a shared cup of coffee at our usual haunt. "He makes you look at things differently, and I’m not sure that’s always a good thing. Remember Mr. Henderson's glare when he saw you sketching during your lunch break? He’s a symbol, Anya. A symbol of everything you’re trying to escape, and Elias… he feels like a leap into the abyss."
