The fluorescent lights of Sterling & Finch hummed their usual, soul-sucking tune, a constant, low-grade thrum that Anya had long ago learned to tune out. Today, however, the sound grated on her nerves, each flicker of the lights a tiny jab, a reminder of the life she was currently living. Mr. Henderson’s voice, a monotone drone that could lull a caffeinated hummingbird to sleep, was the soundtrack to her despair.
