The air in my apartment had always felt a little thin, recycled and faintly scented with the ghost of last night’s takeout. But lately, it seemed to have a new quality, a hum beneath the surface, like a secret being whispered just out of earshot. It started subtly, after Elias. Not immediately, not the day after our whirlwind encounter at the botanical gardens, but a week or so later, when the initial blush of exhilaration had settled into a more sustained, bewildering glow.

It was the small things at first. I’d be halfway through a sentence, describing a particularly dull meeting with Mr. Henderson to Maya over our usual Friday night pizza, and she’d interrupt, her brow furrowed. “You know,” she’d say, her voice thoughtful, “that’s the third time this week you’ve said ‘serendipity’ when talking about something mundane.” I’d just laugh it off, attributing it to Elias’s influence, his way of seeing the world through a prism of wonder. But Maya, ever the pragmatist, would just nod, a faint, knowing smile playing on her lips. She’d always been my anchor, my sensible counterpart in a world that often felt too chaotic. She saw the shift in me, the way my eyes lingered on the sky, the way I’d pause mid-stride, lost in thought.

Then came the coincidences, the ones that nudged at the edges of my perception, too numerous to dismiss as mere chance. I’d be thinking of a particular obscure jazz musician, someone Elias had mentioned in passing, and a few hours later, their music would be playing softly in the background of a cafe I’d never visited before. I’d find myself humming a melody Elias had hummed, only to hear it on the radio later that day. It was as if the world, or at least my corner of it, was rearranging itself to echo his presence.
