Chapter 4
The First Taste
A shared late-night conversation, charged with unspoken attraction. Elias offers Anya a glimpse beyond her mundane reality, a taste of something intoxicating and new. Her heart pounds with a thrilling fear.
The rain had finally ceased, leaving behind a city that shimmered under the sparse glow of streetlights. It was late, far too late for a Tuesday, and Anya found herself lingering in the quiet hum of the nearly deserted café. The scent of stale coffee and damp wool hung in the air, a familiar, comforting blanket that usually soothed her into contented weariness. Tonight, however, it felt more like a cage. She traced the condensation ring her empty teacup had left on the polished wood, her thoughts a tangled mess of spreadsheets and the lingering echo of Elias’s voice.

She’d been walking home, the usual route, the usual drizzle, when a figure emerged from the alleyway across the street. Tall, draped in a coat that seemed to absorb the meager light, and with eyes that held a curious, knowing glint. He’d simply asked for the time, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her. Then, he’d followed her, not in a menacing way, but with a quiet, persistent presence that both unnerved and intrigued her. He’d ended up here, at this very café, ordering a drink Anya had never heard of – something dark and fragrant, smelling vaguely of spices and forgotten dreams.
“You’re still here,” he’d stated, his gaze sweeping over her with an intensity that made her skin prickle.
