The fluorescent lights of Sterling & Finch hummed with their usual, soul-sucking monotony, a sound that had once been the soundtrack to my life. Today, however, it felt like a poorly tuned instrument, grating on nerves that had been restrung by something far more vibrant. I stood by my desk, the beige surface littered with the detritus of predictable days: a half-finished crossword, a chipped mug bearing the Sterling & Finch logo, a stack of invoices that seemed to multiply in the dark. Mr. Henderson’s office door, a solid oak barrier to the outside world and, more importantly, to any semblance of genuine feeling, was ajar.

He’d summoned me. The familiar knot of apprehension tightened in my stomach, a reflex honed by years of veiled criticisms and patronizing smiles. He always found something. A misplaced decimal, a slightly too-casual tone in an email, a perceived lack of enthusiasm for the quarterly report. But today, the knot felt different. It wasn't fear; it was a coiled spring, ready to release.

I smoothed down my sensible grey skirt, a garment that felt increasingly like a costume. The scent of Elias’s cologne, a heady mix of spice and something wild, like rain on dry earth, still clung faintly to my scarf, a secret whisper against the stale air of the office. It was a reminder of the night before, of hushed conversations under a sky dusted with stars, of a touch that had sent shivers not of apprehension, but of pure, unadulterated longing.
