Chapter 8
Aftershocks
A harrowing night in the emergency room stretches on as David Chen, Dr. Evelyn Reed, and Maria Rodriguez struggle to support families through a surge of meth overdoses. They triage crises, confront resource shortages, and wrestle with exhaustion and doubt. As rumors of a lethal new batch circulate, David is pushed to his limits. The chapter ends with David outside in the predawn silence, haunted by the persistence of hope and fear.
David’s hands shook as he lifted a paper cup of stale coffee to his lips. Across the waiting room, the night nurse called out another name. A woman leapt up, hope and terror warring on her face. David’s instinct was to follow, to bear witness, but exhaustion pinned him to the chair.
Maria had returned from one of the curtained bays, her eyes shadowed. She knelt beside a young woman hunched over, arms wrapped around herself. Quiet words passed between them, too soft for David to hear. Maria’s hand settled on the woman’s back—steady, patient. He saw the woman’s shoulders begin to shake, the dam of fear breaking. Maria listened, eyes wet but unwavering.
Dr. Reed appeared, clipboard in hand, phone tucked between shoulder and ear. “Yes, notify the county. No, we still don’t know the full composition,” she said. Her gaze met David’s; he saw the burden behind her calm. She covered the mouthpiece. “Toxicology thinks it’s a contaminated batch. Fentanyl, maybe. People are afraid to call for help. We could see worse before dawn.”
