The weight of the Obsidian Throne pressed down on me, a palpable thing, as suffocating as the perpetual twilight that clung to Wallachia. Each dawn, a pale imitation of light, brought with it the grim procession of duties, the endless council meetings, the hollow pronouncements of my father, King Mathias. His face, etched with the weariness of a kingdom under siege, offered little solace. He saw only the crown, the lineage, the unbroken chain of heirs stretching back into the shadowed mists of our history. He did not see the flickering ember of doubt within me, nor the gnawing hunger for something beyond the gilded cage of royalty.

It was in the hushed hours, when the castle slept and the only sounds were the rustling of unseen creatures in the perpetual gloaming, that I found my true sanctuary. It was a place of whispered secrets and forbidden desires, a place where the air hummed with an energy that both terrified and exhilarated me. It was Marishka’s sanctuary, and mine.

Tonight, the air in her hidden grove was thick with the scent of night-blooming jasmine and something else, something wild and untamed that always accompanied her presence. Moonlight, a rare visitor in our land, dappled through the skeletal branches of ancient trees, painting silver streaks across the moss-covered stones. She stood by a pool, its surface like polished obsidian, her silhouette a study in defiance against the encroaching darkness. Her hair, a cascade of midnight, seemed to absorb the scant light, and her eyes, when they turned to me, held the fierce, untamed glow of a trapped star.
