The air in the hidden grove was thick with the scent of damp earth and the phantom perfume of night-blooming jasmine, a fragrance that always clung to Marishka. Here, beneath the skeletal branches of ancient oaks, the oppressive twilight of Wallachia seemed to soften, as if even the sky held its breath for our stolen moments. My heart, a prisoner of duty and the suffocating weight of the Obsidian Crown, found a fleeting freedom in her presence. Marishka. The name itself was a hushed incantation, a promise of something wild and beautiful that the stone walls of the palace could never contain.

Her eyes, the colour of a storm-tossed sea, met mine across the flickering firelight, and a shiver, not of cold, traced its way down my spine. “They grow bolder, Mihail,” she whispered, her voice a silken thread woven with concern. The shadowed creatures that clawed at our borders, their forms indistinct in the perpetual gloom, seemed to press closer each night. The fragile peace we had clung to, a tattered banner in the wind, was being ripped to shreds. My father, King Mathias, a man carved from granite and duty, paced the war rooms with a grim set to his jaw, his pronouncements growing more dire with each passing council. But even his iron will could not entirely quell the gnawing unease that had settled over Wallachia like a shroud.
