The air in the King's antechamber always tasted of dust and old pronouncements, a stagnant breath that clung to the tapestries depicting Wallachia’s glorious, albeit grim, past. Today, however, it felt heavy with a different kind of decay, a subtle rot that slithered beneath the polished surfaces and the forced smiles of courtiers. I, Mihail, heir to the Obsidian Throne, had always found solace in the quiet studies of my father’s palace, a place where knowledge was a shield against the encroaching gloom. But now, even these hallowed halls felt tainted, the shadows themselves whispering treachery.
Lord Batharus glided into the chamber, his silken robes rustling like a serpent’s scales against the marble floor. He carried with him an aura of false deference, a practiced humility that masked a rapacious hunger. His eyes, dark and deep-set, held a glint that was never quite friendly, always assessing, always calculating. He bowed, a low, theatrical sweep, his smile tight and devoid of warmth.
“Your Highness,” he began, his voice a low murmur, a practiced melody of respect. “A grim day for Wallachia, indeed. The northern patrols report increased activity from the Shadowlands. King Mathias is… concerned.”
