The air in Wallachia had always held a certain weight, a heavy, velvet cloak woven from perpetual twilight and the hum of forgotten enchantments. But now, a new chill permeated the very marrow of the kingdom, a preternatural cold that had nothing to do with the season and everything to do with the encroaching dread.
