The ancient script, brittle as autumn leaves under a frost, unfurled a tapestry of dread. The Oracle’s chamber, usually a sanctuary of hushed reverence, now thrummed with a tension that coiled in my gut. Each word etched into the vellum felt like a shard of ice pressed against my skin. Marishka stood beside me, her hand a cool anchor in mine, her presence a stark contrast to the icy pronouncements of fate. Her eyes, usually pools of vibrant emerald, were shadowed with a worry that mirrored my own.
“’When twilight bleeds and shadows cling,’” I read aloud, my voice a low rumble in the stillness, “‘A crown of night, a heart to sting.’” The words hung in the air, thick with foreboding. This was not the first time we’d consulted the Oracle’s pronouncements, but each encounter deepened the labyrinth of our predicament. The whispers of prophecy had been a constant hum beneath the surface of Wallachia’s troubled existence, but now, they screamed.
Marishka’s fingers tightened around mine. “’A heart to sting,’” she murmured, her voice barely a breath. “It speaks of pain, Mihail. Of loss.”
