The air in the King's antechamber was thick with the scent of old parchment and the unspoken anxieties of a kingdom teetering on the precipice. Sunlight, a rare visitor in Wallachia, dared to peek through the arched windows, casting elongated shadows that danced with the dust motes. I, Mihail, Prince of this perpetually twilit realm, sat with my father, King Mathias, a man whose weathered face bore the etchings of a thousand sleepless nights. His gaze, usually sharp and commanding, was clouded with a weariness that mirrored the kingdom’s own. The reports from the northern borders were grim, whispers of renewed incursions, of shadows stirring from their ancient slumber. Each word spoken by the King’s advisors was a stone added to the crushing weight of my duty.

“The scouts speak of unusual formations, Mihail,” my father’s voice rumbled, low and grave. “Not mere brigands, but a disciplined force. Their movements… unnatural.”

I nodded, my jaw tight. Unnatural. That word had become a familiar companion in Wallachia. It clung to the whispers of Marishka’s magic, to the unsettling dreams that plagued my sleep, and now, to the very enemy we fought. Lord Batharus, ever the picture of solicitous loyalty, stood a respectful distance behind the King, his dark eyes, like polished obsidian, flickered with an almost imperceptible intensity. He was a master of this stage, his every gesture calculated, his every word a carefully placed brick in the edifice of his ambition. He spoke of reinforcing garrisons, of mobilizing reserves, his voice smooth as river stone, yet beneath it, I sensed a current of something far less benign.
