The great hall of the Obsidian Palace was a monument to stone and shadow, a place where the perpetual twilight of Wallachia seemed to congeal into tangible form. High above, the vaulted ceilings, carved with the grim visages of forgotten kings, dripped with a perpetual, spectral moisture. Here, my father, King Mathias, held his court, a man whose face was etched with the relentless anxieties of his reign. His gaze, when it fell upon me, was a heavy thing, a surveyor of my worth and a judge of my failings, though he knew not the true weight of the latter.

“Mihail,” his voice, a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very stones of the hall, cut through the hushed murmurs of the assembled lords and ladies. “You were late to the council.”

I bowed, the familiar ache of duty a constant companion. “My apologies, Father. The western watch required my attention.” It was a half-truth, a carefully constructed facade. The western watch had been quiet, but the whispers that had reached me from the shadowed woods beyond the kingdom’s borders were far more pressing, far more terrifying. They spoke of a stirring, an ancient malevolence flexing its unseen muscles.
