  21. 21The Shadow of Lord BarabusChapter Two: The Shadow of Lord Barabus Moonlight spilled across the Carpathian Mountains as Marishka and Prince Mihail rode toward Poenari Castle. The ancient fortress stood high above the valley, its stone walls glowing faintly beneath the stars while torchlight flickered along the winding road. Marishka's floor-length crimson hair streamed behind her as she guided her black horse up the mountain path. Beside her rode Mihail upon his magnificent white horse, his golden hair shining beneath the moon. Neither rider spoke for several moments. At last Mihail looked toward the distant fortress. "Something is wrong." Marishka's green eyes narrowed. "Yes," she answered quietly. "The castle is surrounded by magic." But it was not her magic. High within Poenari's oldest tower, King Mathias stood before a great stone window. His expression was troubled. He had received word that strange riders had been seen throughout the mountains, and several villages had reported mysterious lights moving among the forests. Behind him stood Lord Varabus. Varabus wore a magnificent black cloak clasped with silver. To anyone unfamiliar with him, he appeared to be a loyal nobleman. But beneath his calm expression was a dangerous ambition. "My king," Varabus said smoothly, "the sorceress has returned." Mathias turned sharply. "Marishka?" "She rides beside your son." The king's face became grim. "I know." Varabus stepped closer. "Then perhaps the time has come to decide whether she is friend or enemy." Mathias studied him carefully. "Be very careful, Varabus. I have known Marishka since she was a child. She has never betrayed this kingdom." Varabus smiled. "Not yet." Far below the castle, Marishka suddenly stopped her horse. Mihail reined in his white horse beside her. "What is it?" She dismounted and placed one hand upon the earth. The wind died. Even the forest seemed to hold its breath. "There is someone inside Poenari who has been calling upon an ancient power," Marishka whispered. "Someone who wants the castle—and the kingdom." Mihail's expression hardened. "Varabus." Marishka looked toward the castle. "Yes." Together they continued toward the fortress. Neither knew that Varabus had already prepared his trap. When the great gates of Poenari opened, dozens of torches illuminated the courtyard. Soldiers stood along the walls, watching silently as Marishka and Mihail entered. At the top of the stone staircase stood King Mathias. For a moment, father and son simply looked at one another. Then Mathias descended the steps. "Mihail, you have returned." The prince bowed respectfully. "I have, Father." Mathias looked toward Marishka. "And you have brought her with you." Marishka lowered her head. "I came because your kingdom is in danger." Before Mathias could answer, a cold voice echoed from the shadows. "Or perhaps she came because she intends to claim it." Lord Varabus stepped into the torchlight. Mihail immediately moved between Varabus and Marishka. But Marishka gently stopped him. "There is no need." Her green eyes fixed upon Varabus. "You have been searching for something beneath this castle." Varabus's smile disappeared. Mathias looked at his lord in astonishment. "What is she talking about?" Marishka pointed toward the oldest tower of Poenari. "Something was buried beneath these mountains centuries ago. Something powerful enough to destroy an entire kingdom." A distant rumble shook the castle. The torches flickered. Then, from somewhere deep beneath Poenari, came the sound of a tremendous stone door opening. Everyone fell silent. Varabus slowly smiled again. "At last." Marishka realized the terrible truth. Varabus had not been waiting for her. He had been waiting for the door to open. And whatever lay beneath Poenari Castle was now awake. King Mathias drew his sword. "Mihail, take the guards and secure the lower passages." The prince nodded. "And Marishka?" The king looked at the sorceress. "You are the only one who may understand what lies below." Marishka looked toward the dark stairway. "Then I will go." Mihail stepped forward. "Not alone." For the first time that night, Marishka smiled. Together they descended into the darkness beneath Poenari while King Mathias gathered his soldiers above. Behind them, Lord Varabus quietly followed. And deep beneath the castle, something ancient opened its eyes.
  22. 22The AwakeningChapter Three: The Awakening The chamber beneath Poenari Castle trembled as the crimson light surrounding the ancient altar grew brighter. Marishka stood beside Mihail, her green eyes fixed upon the mysterious darkness beyond the altar. Lord Barabus remained motionless. For the first time since they had entered the chamber, the confidence had vanished from his face. The ancient voice spoke again. "Who has broken my seal?" Barabus lifted his chin. "I have." The darkness seemed to move. "And what do you seek?" "Power." Marishka immediately stepped forward. "Barabus, stop." He turned toward her. "Why should I?" "Because you don't understand what you have awakened." "I understand perfectly." "No," Marishka replied. "You understand power. You do not understand its price." The chamber suddenly became silent. Then the ancient voice whispered: "Every kingdom has a price." Mihail tightened his grip upon his sword. "Who are you?" The darkness answered. "I am the memory of those who ruled before your fathers' fathers. I am the guardian beneath the mountain." Marishka stared at the altar. "The guardian..." She suddenly remembered an ancient legend her grandmother had once told her—a story of a spirit bound beneath the Carpathians to protect the mountain kingdom from those who sought to conquer it. Mihail looked at her. "You know what this is." "I know the legend." Barabus laughed. "Legends are merely stories." Marishka shook her head. "Not this one." Far above them, King Mathias stood in the great hall surrounded by soldiers. The castle shook again. Stone dust drifted from the ceiling. One of the guards approached. "Your Majesty, the lower passages have sealed themselves." Mathias looked toward the staircase. "My son is down there." He started toward the passage. The captain stepped in front of him. "Your Majesty, it may be too dangerous." Mathias drew his sword. "My son is down there." The captain lowered his head. "Then I will go with you." Together they descended. Deep beneath the castle, Barabus reached toward the altar. A strange glow surrounded his hand. He smiled. "Give me the power to rule." The ancient voice answered: "You would rule others?" "Yes." "Then prove you are worthy." The chamber went dark. Barabus looked around. "Where are you?" Marishka suddenly understood. "The guardian isn't giving you power." Barabus turned toward her. "What?" "It is testing you." A massive shadow appeared behind the altar. Barabus stepped backward. For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes. Mihail moved closer to Marishka. "What do we do?" She looked at him. "We must prevent Barabus from making the wrong choice." "And if he already has?" Marishka looked toward the darkness. "Then we may have to save the kingdom from him." Suddenly, King Mathias and his guards appeared at the entrance. "Mihail!" The prince turned. "Father!" Mathias hurried toward his son. "Are you unharmed?" "We are." The king looked toward Barabus. "What have you done?" Barabus slowly turned. "Something your kingdom will remember forever." Mathias raised his sword. "You have betrayed me." Barabus's expression hardened. "I served you faithfully for years." "You served yourself." Barabus looked toward the altar. "Perhaps." The guardian spoke once more. "Enough." Every torch in the chamber extinguished. A great wind swept through the underground hall. Marishka's crimson hair flew around her as she raised both hands. Green light surrounded her fingers. Mihail stared in amazement. "Marishka..." "Stay behind me." She stepped toward the altar. "I am Marishka, daughter of the old forests and keeper of the northern magic." The guardian became silent. Then: "Why have you come?" "To protect the living from the dead." A long silence followed. Finally, the guardian answered. "Then you must choose." Marishka looked toward Mihail. "What choice?" "The kingdom may be protected by sacrifice... or destroyed by ambition." Mihail stepped forward. "If there is a way to protect everyone, we will find it." The guardian seemed to consider his words. Then the chamber began to glow. Three ancient symbols appeared upon the stone floor. One before Marishka. One before Mihail. And one before Lord Barabus. Barabus stared at his symbol. "What is this?" Marishka whispered: "The Trial." The guardian spoke. "Each of you shall face what lies within your heart." The chamber doors slammed shut. The walls disappeared. And suddenly Marishka found herself standing alone in a moonlit forest. Mihail was nowhere to be seen. She called his name. No answer. Then a voice whispered behind her. "Marishka." She turned. Standing among the trees was a figure she had not seen for many years. Her heart stopped. Meanwhile, Mihail stood in an enormous throne room. Before him was a golden crown. And upon the throne sat a shadow wearing his own face. "Take the crown," it whispered. "You were born to rule." Mihail stepped backward. "I don't want power at the cost of others." The shadow smiled. "Then you will lose everything." And in another chamber, Lord Barabus stood before an enormous mirror. Inside the glass he saw himself as king of a vast empire. Thousands bowed before him. A magnificent crown rested upon his head. Barabus smiled. At last, he believed the ancient power was offering him exactly what he had always wanted. But behind the reflection stood something else. Something watching him. Something waiting. Barabus slowly turned. And the mirror smiled back. The Trial had begun. I can continue with Chapter Four, revealing what Marishka sees in the forest, what Mihail must choose in the throne room, and what Lord Barabus discovers inside the mirror.
  23. 23The Three TrialsChapter Four: The Three Trials Marishka — The Forest of Memories Marishka stood beneath the silver moon, surrounded by ancient trees. Mist curled around her feet. "Who are you?" she whispered. The figure stepped forward. It was an old woman with silver hair and kind green eyes. Marishka's breath caught. "Grandmother..." The woman smiled. "You have grown into a powerful sorceress, little one." Marishka's eyes filled with tears. "But you're gone." "I am." Marishka reached toward her, but her hand passed through the shimmering figure. "Why are you here?" "Because you have forgotten something." "What?" "Magic is not power, Marishka. Magic is responsibility." The forest began changing around them. The trees became black silhouettes. The moon disappeared. Marishka saw images of frightened villagers, burning villages, armies marching across mountains, and kings fighting for territory. Her grandmother's voice remained calm. "Power can protect." The images changed. "Power can destroy." Marishka lowered her hands. "Then how do I know which choice is right?" "You don't." The old woman smiled sadly. "You listen to your heart—and you accept the consequences." A path appeared through the forest. At its end stood Mihail. Marishka began walking toward him. But her grandmother called after her. "Remember, Marishka: you cannot save everyone by yourself." Marishka turned. The old woman was gone. Only the moon remained. Mihail — The Throne of Shadows Mihail stood before the mysterious throne. The shadow wearing his face remained seated upon it. "Sit," it commanded. Mihail shook his head. "I will not." "You are a prince." "That doesn't mean I deserve a crown." The shadow laughed. "Your father is aging." Mihail's expression hardened. "Do not speak of my father." "You will become king." "When the time comes." "And what if someone else takes the throne?" Mihail stared at the shadow. "Then I will defend my kingdom." "Even if you must sacrifice the people you love?" Mihail hesitated. The shadow smiled. "That is the price of kingship." Mihail looked toward the crown. For one brief moment, he imagined himself wearing it. Then he turned away. "A king who must destroy the people he protects is no king at all." The throne cracked. The shadow screamed. The entire room began collapsing around him. Mihail remained standing. "I choose my people." The crown vanished. And the doors opened. Lord Barabus — The Mirror Barabus stared into the enchanted mirror. His reflection wore a magnificent crown. Behind him stretched an enormous palace. Armies filled the courtyards. Thousands bowed before him. "You see?" whispered the voice. "This can be yours." Barabus smiled. "I knew it." The reflection raised its hand. Barabus raised his. But their movements were not quite the same. Barabus froze. His reflection smiled. "Do you truly believe you control me?" Barabus stepped backward. "What are you?" The reflection leaned closer to the glass. "I am the part of you that you have hidden from everyone." The image changed. Barabus saw himself as a young man—ambitious, angry, and convinced that the world had denied him the greatness he deserved. He saw every betrayal. Every manipulation. Every secret plan. Every person he had sacrificed for his ambitions. Barabus looked away. "Enough." The reflection continued. "You never wanted to serve the kingdom." "I wanted what I deserved." "You wanted everyone beneath you." Barabus's face hardened. "Yes." The mirror cracked. A deep rumble filled the chamber. Then the reflection spoke one final time. "Then prove it." The mirror shattered. Darkness swallowed Barabus. The Return Marishka suddenly found herself standing in the underground chamber again. Mihail appeared beside her. "Marishka!" She turned toward him. "Mihail." He smiled with relief. "You are safe." "So are you." Across the chamber, King Mathias stood beside his soldiers. But Barabus was nowhere to be seen. The king looked around. "Where is he?" Marishka stared at the shattered mirror. "He failed the Trial." A terrible sound echoed through the chamber. Something moved behind the altar. Mihail drew his sword. "Is it over?" Marishka shook her head. "No." The ancient guardian appeared again. "The Trial is complete." King Mathias stepped forward. "What happens now?" The guardian turned toward the broken mirror. "The one who sought power has awakened the darkness he carried within." A cold wind swept through the chamber. Then Barabus's voice echoed from somewhere far below. "You haven't defeated me." Mihail looked toward the darkness. "Barabus!" His voice returned as a distant whisper. "I have only begun." The guardian's light suddenly vanished. The chamber became completely dark. Marishka reached for Mihail's hand. "We must leave." "Why?" She looked toward the deepest passage beneath the castle. "Because something else has awakened." Far beneath Poenari, beyond the ancient chamber, another door slowly opened. And behind it waited a secret that even the guardian had feared. To be continued... I can continue with Chapter Five, where Marishka and Mihail discover the secret beyond the second door and learn why Lord Barabus wanted the ancient power in the first place.
  24. 24The Door Beneath the MountainChapter Five: The Door Beneath the Mountain The chamber beneath Poenari had fallen silent. Marishka stood beside Mihail, staring into the darkness where the second ancient door had appeared. King Mathias approached slowly. "That door was not there before." Marishka nodded. "It was hidden by magic." Mihail looked at the strange symbols carved into its surface. "Can you open it?" Marishka studied the markings. "Perhaps." She placed her hand against the stone. Immediately, the symbols began glowing green. The door trembled. A voice whispered through the darkness. "Daughter of the old magic..." Marishka pulled her hand away. "You know me?" "Your blood remembers." Mihail looked at her. "What does that mean?" Marishka didn't answer. The door slowly opened. Beyond it stretched a vast underground passage illuminated by pale blue crystals. King Mathias ordered his soldiers to remain behind. "We don't know what lies ahead." Mihail looked at his father. "Then we should find out." Marishka nodded. Together, she and Mihail entered the passage. They walked for what seemed like hours. Ancient carvings covered the walls. Marishka recognized some of them. "These symbols tell the history of Poenari." Mihail looked closer. "What do they say?" "Long before this castle was built, a guardian protected these mountains." "And the power Barabus wanted?" "It wasn't a weapon." Marishka stopped. "It was a prison." Mihail's expression changed. "A prison?" She nodded. "Something was imprisoned beneath the mountain." A sudden chill passed through the corridor. Mihail looked into the darkness. "What?" Marishka whispered: "Something that wanted to rule the living." Far behind them, Lord Barabus opened his eyes. He was lying upon a stone floor in a chamber he had never seen before. The shattered pieces of the enchanted mirror surrounded him. A faint voice spoke from the darkness. "You wanted power." Barabus slowly rose. "Who are you?" "You called me." "I called the guardian." "No." A shadow moved across the wall. "You called something much older." Barabus stared into the darkness. "What do you want?" The voice answered: "Exactly what you want." Barabus's eyes narrowed. "And what is that?" "To rule." Barabus smiled. "Then we understand one another." But the darkness laughed. "You still believe you are my master." Barabus's smile disappeared. Marishka and Mihail reached the end of the passage. There stood an enormous underground hall. At its center was a circular stone platform surrounded by twelve ancient pillars. Upon the platform rested a crystal unlike anything Marishka had ever seen. It glowed with a soft silver light. Mihail approached. "What is it?" "The Heart of the Mountain." Marishka spoke the words almost reverently. "It was created to keep the ancient prisoner asleep." Mihail looked around. "Then why is it glowing?" Marishka's expression changed. "Because someone is trying to awaken it." A deep vibration shook the chamber. The crystal flickered. Then a crack appeared across its surface. Mihail stepped backward. "Marishka." "I see it." Another crack appeared. Then another. Marishka raised both hands. Green light surrounded her. "I need your help." Mihail stood beside her. "What do you need me to do?" "Believe in me." He smiled. "I already do." Their hands met. Green and blue light flowed across the stone platform. The Heart of the Mountain began glowing brighter. For several moments, the cracks stopped spreading. Then— A voice echoed through the chamber. "Marishka." She froze. Mihail looked around. "Who said your name?" Marishka stared at the crystal. "I don't know." The voice came again. "You carry the blood of the first guardian." Marishka's eyes widened. "No." Mihail looked at her. "What is it saying?" She whispered: "It says my family has protected this prison for generations." The crystal pulsed. "And now the prison is failing." A tremendous roar shook the underground hall. Dust fell from the ceiling. Marishka looked toward the passage. "Barabus." Mihail drew his sword. "You think he caused this?" "I know he did." Suddenly footsteps echoed through the corridor. King Mathias appeared with his guards. "Marishka!" She turned. "Father!" Mathias looked at the glowing crystal. "What is happening?" Marishka answered quietly. "The prison is breaking." The king's face became pale. "Then we must leave." Marishka shook her head. "If we leave, whatever is imprisoned here may escape." Mihail looked at his father. "Then we stay." Mathias looked at his son. For a moment he saw not a young prince, but the future king of his kingdom. "Very well." He raised his sword. "We stand together." A deep laugh echoed from the darkness. Barabus stepped into the chamber. His clothes were torn, but his eyes burned with unnatural determination. "You should have left when you had the chance." Mihail raised his sword. "Barabus!" The lord looked toward Marishka. "You finally discovered the truth." Marishka stared at him. "What have you done?" Barabus smiled. "I opened the prison." King Mathias shouted: "Why?" Barabus turned toward him. "Because the power inside that prison can give me what no crown ever could." Marishka stepped forward. "You will destroy the kingdom." Barabus laughed softly. "No." He looked toward the cracked crystal. "I will rule it." The crystal suddenly shattered with a deafening sound. A wave of silver light swept through the chamber. Everyone was thrown backward. When Marishka opened her eyes, the Heart of the Mountain was gone. And beneath the broken platform stood a vast black doorway. From beyond it came a whisper: "At last... I am free." Marishka slowly rose. Mihail stood beside her. King Mathias lifted his sword. And Lord Barabus stared into the darkness with a smile. He had finally awakened the power he had sought. But he had made one terrible mistake. He had forgotten to ask whether that power intended to obey him. To be continued...
