Chapter 7

Chapter 7 — The Hares Scattered

Elina receives an unexpected visit from Uncle Dmitri, who arrives at her studio unannounced after years of absence. He is older, diminished, still wearing his leather jacket with paint smudges. Their conversation circles the past: Dmitri reveals he has been watching from a distance, that he knows her grandmother told her about the shed and the infant brother. He speaks about the night he confronted her father, about debts he still carries, about the painting he made of the doorway scene Elina has been drawing. He leaves a small rolled canvas behind. After he goes, Elina opens it and finds a depiction of two hands releasing a dark shape between them. She calls her grandmother to say Dmitri came, and Anya responds with quiet resignation, suggesting that some people return only to leave again. The chapter ends with Elina adding the canvas to her wall, alongside her three drawings, completing a sequence she did not know she was building.

The knock came at half past nine, when the morning light had already hardened into its daytime self and the city outside had settled into its ordinary noises—delivery trucks, a dog barking somewhere in the courtyard below, the building's pipes groaning their usual complaints. Elina was at her desk, not drawing but staring at the three images taped to her wall, her hands still clean, charcoal sticks untouched in their box. She had been sitting like that for twenty minutes, perhaps longer, in the particular stillness that follows the opening of something long sealed—the way a room feels after a window is pushed up and the air outside enters for the first time in years, carrying dust and sound and the faint disorienting scent of a world that had been there all along.

The knock was not tentative. It had a rhythm to it, almost theatrical—three quick raps, a pause, then one more as if the hand had reconsidered and decided to commit. She knew before she opened the door. Not with certainty but with the kind of body-knowledge that lives below thought, in the place where patterns are recognized before they are named. The knock belonged to someone who performed even small gestures with flair.

Dmitri stood in the hallway. He looked like a man who had been traveling for a long time and had not decided whether the journey was over. His leather jacket was older than she remembered—or perhaps the same jacket, simply worn further into itself, the creases deeper, the paint smudges layered atop older paint smudges like a geological record of all the canvases he had leaned against. His hair had thinned at the temples. Lines bracketed his mouth in a way that gave his face a carved quality, as if life had been working on him with steady patience. But his eyes were the same—bright, searching, carrying that particular light of someone who found the world more interesting than it perhaps deserved to be.
