Chapter 5
Chapter 5 — The Weight of Small Things
Elina reads the diary entry following the torn-out page, which describes a night when she witnessed her father and Uncle Dmitri in confrontation near the shed. She recalls Mrs. Petrova's observations about a car that visited their house late at night, Grandmother Anya's attempt to redirect Elina's attention with a story about a box, and her father's prolonged silence afterward. In the present, Elina studies the words 'His hands' on the back of the sketch and begins a new drawing that surfaces a fragmented memory of standing in the doorway of the shed. She calls her grandmother, who at first deflects but then says something that shifts Elina's understanding. The chapter ends with Elina realizing the dark shape in both drawings may be connected to what was locked inside the shed.
Elina set the sketch down and pressed her palms flat against the studio table, steadying herself the way a person steadies a surface before placing something fragile upon it.
The diary lay open to the entry after the torn page. August 9. The cramped handwriting. She had read it three times already, and each time the words had grown heavier, but she had not yet let them fully arrive. Now she read them again, slowly, the way one walks into cold water—one step, then another, letting the chill rise.
Father thinks I don't see. Dmitri thinks I forgot.
