Aunt Clara found Addie in the sun-dappled alcove of the living room, a place that had become her sanctuary. The afternoon light, usually so cheerful, felt muted today, as if the very air around Addie was heavy with unspoken disappointment. The flute, that gleaming silver companion, lay silent and displaced on a high shelf, a cruel reminder of the banished music. Addie’s fingers, usually so nimble and alive, were curled loosely in her lap, tracing the worn seams of her skirt. Her gaze was fixed on a point somewhere beyond the window, a distant, unseeing look that Aunt Clara knew all too well. It was the look of a bird with clipped wings, its song stifled.

Aunt Clara settled onto the plush armchair opposite, the movement gentle, unhurried. She didn't speak immediately, allowing the quiet to fill the space between them. She watched Addie, her heart aching with a familiar tenderness. She saw not just a child being punished, but a spirit being dimmed. The parents, bless their well-meaning hearts, saw only the potential for distraction, the perceived threat to academic perfection. They couldn't see the vital nourishment Addie’s soul drew from melody, the way music was not a diversion, but a part of her very being.

"The roses are blooming rather spectacularly this year, wouldn't you agree, Addie?" Aunt Clara finally ventured, her voice soft, like the rustle of leaves.
