Chapter 4
The Silence of the Flute
Her parents, noticing her continued dedication to music, confiscate the flute. They believe this will force her to 'focus' on her schoolwork, leaving Addie heartbroken and silenced.
The wooden case, once a beacon of possibility, now felt like a tomb. Addie ran a trembling finger over the worn velvet lining, the indentation where her flute usually rested a stark, empty crescent. It had happened so suddenly, a quiet Tuesday evening that had fractured into a thousand pieces of unspoken disappointment. Her parents, their faces a mixture of stern resolve and what Addie perceived as a profound lack of understanding, had presented their ultimatum with a practiced gentleness that somehow made it worse.
“Addie, darling,” her mother had begun, her voice soft but firm, as she held the flute case at arm’s length, as if it were a delicate, potentially explosive artifact. “We’ve been noticing. You’re spending so much time with this… this instrument. And your grades, while still good, aren’t what they could be. We just want you to focus, sweetheart. Truly focus on your studies.”
Her father had nodded, his gaze fixed somewhere beyond Addie’s shoulder, as if unwilling to meet the hurt he knew would be there. “Music is a wonderful hobby, Addie, a lovely pastime. But it’s not going to secure your future. Schoolwork will. We need you to prioritize that. So, for now, the flute will have to be put away. Just until we see a significant improvement in your academic performance.”
