The crisp envelope lay on the mahogany hall table, its edges sharp against the polished wood, a stark contrast to the soft, worn velvet of the armchair where Addie sat, her heart thrumming a frantic, irregular beat against her ribs. Aunt Clara, perched on the edge of the sofa, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, mirrored the nervous energy radiating from her niece. The silence in the house was thick, heavy with anticipation, each tick of the grandfather clock in the corner amplifying the suspense. Addie’s parents were out, a rare but opportune absence that had allowed Aunt Clara to retrieve the letter from the morning post, her own hands trembling slightly as she’d presented it to Addie.

Addie’s fingers, usually so deft on the keys of her flute or so eager to trace the lines of a melody, felt clumsy and numb as she reached for the envelope. The embossed crest of the prestigious music academy seemed to shimmer under the soft lamplight, a symbol of a world she had only dared to dream of, a world that felt impossibly distant just yesterday. She traced the elegant script of her name, a breath catching in her throat. This was it. The culmination of countless whispered practices, of stolen moments with her flute, of late nights poring over sheet music by the dim glow of her bedside lamp.

“Go on, dear,” Aunt Clara’s voice was a soft murmur, a comforting balm against the rising tide of anxiety. “Open it.”
