The Letter Arrives

A letter arrives from the arts school. Addie's hands tremble as she opens it, her future hanging in the balance, her parents watching with a mixture of anxiety and curiosity.

The crisp, cream-colored envelope lay on the polished oak of the kitchen table, stark against the usual clutter of mail and breakfast remnants. It was an anomaly, a beacon of anticipation in the mundane landscape of their everyday. Addie’s gaze was fixed upon it, a silent, unwavering stare that had held the envelope captive since it had been plucked from the morning post. Her fingers, usually so nimble on the keys of her flute or so expressive when shaping a melody, were clasped tightly in her lap, a nervous tremor running through them.

Her parents sat opposite her, their faces a tableau of carefully controlled concern. Her mother, ever observant, had her lips pressed into a thin line, her eyes darting between Addie and the unopened letter. Her father, his brow furrowed, toyed with the rim of his coffee mug, his silence more charged than any words he might have uttered. Aunt Clara, a warm presence usually filling the room with a gentle hum of her own, was conspicuously absent, having left earlier for her morning errands, a silent understanding passing between her and Addie as she’d given her niece a reassuring squeeze of the shoulder. This, Clara had known, was Addie’s moment.

“Well?” her mother prompted, her voice a little too sharp, a little too brittle. “Aren’t you going to open it, Addie?”
