It was a Saturday morning, usually a time of hushed anxiety for Addie, a day where every rustle of paper or sigh from her parents felt like an impending lecture. But today, a different kind of anticipation hummed within her.
Her mother sat at the polished oak dining table, a stack of neatly organized papers before her, her brow furrowed in concentration. Her father was at the kitchen counter, meticulously wiping down the already spotless granite. They were in their usual Saturday morning positions, the silent sentinels of academic discipline. Yet, Addie felt a flicker of hope, a defiant ember that had been carefully nurtured by Aunt Clara’s unwavering belief.
Aunt Clara, bless her soul, had been a whirlwind of encouragement throughout the week. She’d hummed along to the radio with a knowing smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners. She’d subtly steered conversations away from Addie’s grades, focusing instead on the joy of a well-turned phrase or the beauty of a perfectly brewed cup of tea. And in the quiet moments, when Addie’s parents were out, Aunt Clara would whisper, “They’re listening, Addie. They’re starting to hear you.”
