A Tentative Truce
After the show, her parents approach Addie. The conversation is hesitant, but a new understanding begins to form. They acknowledge her talent, though concerns remain.
The echoes of the final note still seemed to shimmer in the air, a delicate haze clinging to the edges of Addie’s awareness. She stood on the small, makeshift stage, the warmth of the spotlight a comforting weight, her heart still thrumming a wild, joyous rhythm against her ribs. The applause, a tidal wave of sound, had washed over her, lifting her higher than she’d ever imagined. And then, as the last of the cheers began to fade, she saw them.
Her parents. Standing near the back, their faces etched with a mixture of surprise and something else, something Addie couldn’t quite decipher. Aunt Clara, beaming beside them, gave Addie a tiny, almost imperceptible nod, a silent encouragement that settled deep within her.
Addie’s legs felt a little wobbly as she stepped down from the stage, clutching her flute case like a lifeline. She hadn’t expected them to be there. After the initial shock of her performance, the hours of secret practice, the sheer audacity of it all, she’d braced herself for a lecture, for the familiar pronouncements about wasted time. But they hadn’t left.
