The hush that fell over the auditorium was a tangible thing, a soft blanket woven from held breaths and expectant silence. Addie stood at the edge of the stage, the bright, almost blinding lights making the sea of faces blur into a gentle wash of color. Her heart, usually a frantic hummingbird trapped in her chest, felt strangely steady, like a deep, resonant drumbeat. Beside her, Aunt Clara offered a small, encouraging smile, her hand a warm weight on Addie’s shoulder for just a moment before withdrawing.

Addie walked to the center of the stage, the polished wood cool beneath her worn ballet flats. The microphone stand loomed before her, a metallic sentinel. She adjusted it with a practiced hand, her fingers finding their familiar place. Beside it lay her flute, its silver gleam a beacon in the dim light. She picked it up, the cool metal a comforting weight, the keys smooth and familiar against her fingertips. It felt like an extension of herself, a part of her soul given form.

She closed her eyes for a fleeting second, picturing the notes, the melody, the story she wanted to tell. This was it. The moment she had practiced for, dreamt of, and sometimes, in the quiet of her room, even dared to believe in. Her parents were somewhere in the audience, a knot of anxiety and a flicker of pride warring within her. She hadn't seen them since she'd arrived, Aunt Clara having whisked her away with a whispered “This is your moment, darling.”
