The Night of the Performance

The talent show arrives. Addie, backstage, feels a surge of nerves and determination. Aunt Clara gives her a reassuring smile, a silent promise of support for her performance.

The air backstage at the community hall hummed with a nervous energy, thick and palpable, much like the velvet curtains that hung heavily on either side of the makeshift stage. It smelled faintly of dust and anticipation, a scent Addie knew she’d carry with her long after the final note faded. Tonight was the night. The annual Willow Creek Talent Showcase, a local affair that had always seemed like a distant dream, was now a very real, very terrifying, present.

Addie’s fingers, usually so nimble and sure on the keys of her flute, felt clumsy and cold as she clutched it. The polished silver seemed to gleam mockingly in the dim backstage light, a constant reminder of the secret practice sessions, the stolen moments of melody that had become her lifeline. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, a percussive beat that threatened to drown out the gentle, encouraging hum of her own voice, which she was trying to coax into a steadying melody.

She glanced around, her eyes wide, taking in the kaleidoscope of nervous performers. A young boy, no older than seven, was meticulously adjusting the bow on his violin, his brow furrowed in concentration. A pair of acrobatic twins were stretching their lithe bodies with an almost feline grace, their leotards shimmering under the bare bulbs. And then there was her. Addie, with her flute, a whisper of a song caught in her throat, and a prayer on her lips.
