Chapter 2
Hunkering Down Together
A nervous Melissa learns about Hurricane Melissa. Her parents calmly guide the family in preparing their home, bringing in toys and securing windows. They work as a team to make their house a safe haven.
Melissa watched as the grown-ups scurried about, their faces etched with a new kind of worry. The happy chatter of her friends had faded, replaced by the rustling of leaves, which was growing louder and more insistent with every passing minute. She clutched her favorite teddy bear, Barnaby, a little tighter. The sky, once a brilliant, cheerful blue, was now a bruised and angry purple-gray, and the wind, which had been a playful whisper, was starting to roar like a grumpy giant.
Her mom came out onto the porch, her brow furrowed. She wore a determined look, the kind Melissa usually saw when Mom was trying to get her to eat her broccoli. "Melissa, honey, come inside, please," she called, her voice a little strained.
Melissa hesitated, glancing back at the yard where her bright red ball lay abandoned. The wind tugged at her hair, whipping it around her face. She could feel a fluttery, nervous feeling in her tummy, like a flock of tiny birds were trapped inside.
Her dad appeared beside her mom, his strong hands already busy securing the porch swing. "That's right, sweetie. Time to come in," he said, his voice calm and steady, a stark contrast to the growing rumble in the distance.
Inside, the house felt different. The usual sunny warmth was replaced by a sense of urgency. Her parents moved with a focused energy, their actions purposeful. They brought in the colorful cushions from the porch chairs, the little watering can that Melissa used for her pretend garden, and even Barnaby’s smaller companion, a floppy-eared bunny named Patches.
"Mom, why is everyone bringing everything inside?" Melissa asked, her voice small. She watched as her dad carefully rolled up the bright blue tarp that usually covered their patio furniture. It looked like he was tucking a giant, sleeping creature into bed.
Her mom knelt beside her, her eyes soft but serious. "Well, Melissa," she began, "there's a very big storm coming. It's called a hurricane."
Melissa’s eyes widened. A hurricane. The word sounded powerful, like a lion’s roar. "Is it… is it like the wind outside?"
"It is," her dad confirmed, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. "But much, much stronger. And it brings a lot of rain, too. We need to make sure our house is safe and strong so that we can all stay cozy and protected inside."
Melissa looked around the living room. Her dad was now carefully closing all the blinds, making the room dim and mysterious. Her mom was checking the latches on the windows, making sure they were shut tight. It felt like they were building a secret fort, but instead of for playing, it was for hiding from something big and loud.
"What's its name?" Melissa whispered, still a little unsure.
Her mom smiled, a small, reassuring smile. "It's called Hurricane Melissa."
Melissa blinked. "Hurricane Melissa? That's… that's my name!"
Her dad chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that was much friendlier than the wind outside. "It is! Sometimes, storms get their names from people. This one just happens to share yours." He winked at her. "Don't worry, though. You're much friendlier than this storm is going to be."
Melissa thought about that. She was Melissa, and this storm was Melissa. She wondered if they were alike. She felt a little scared, but also a tiny bit curious. She was a brave girl, her mom often told her. She could be brave for Hurricane Melissa, too.
"So, we're going to stay inside?" she asked, looking at her parents.
"That's right," her mom said, gathering some of Melissa's favorite books and a box of crayons. "We're going to hunker down together. Like a team." She handed Melissa Barnaby and Patches. "You can help by making sure they're comfortable. And maybe you can draw us some pictures of what you think a hurricane looks like."
Melissa nodded, feeling a little better. Her parents weren't panicking. They were working together, making a plan. It was like a game, but a very important one. She sat on the floor, Barnaby nestled on one side and Patches on the other. She opened her crayon box, the bright colors a welcome sight in the dim room.
Her dad was now checking the pantry, making sure they had plenty of water and snacks. Her mom was gathering blankets and pillows, creating a cozy nest in the living room. It was clear they were preparing for a long stay.
"Are we going to have to sleep in here?" Melissa asked, looking at the pile of cushions.
"Probably," her dad said, his voice still calm. "It's the safest place in the house during a hurricane. We'll all be together, nice and snug."
Melissa looked at her parents, at the way they worked together, their hands brushing occasionally, their eyes meeting with quiet understanding. She saw the love and the care in their actions, and it made the fluttery feeling in her tummy start to settle. They were making their house a safe haven, a cozy cave against the storm.
She picked up a bright yellow crayon and began to draw. She drew big, swirly lines for the wind, and lots of raindrops. Then, she drew a picture of her family, all holding hands. In the middle of the drawing, she drew a little girl with a determined smile, and next to her, a big, friendly sun peeking out from behind the storm clouds. She decided that even if the storm was named Melissa, *her* Melissa, the one who loved her family and Barnaby and Patches, was the strongest Melissa of all.
The wind outside began to howl louder, a mournful sound that seemed to press against the windows. Melissa held Barnaby a little tighter, but she wasn't as scared as she had been a little while ago. She looked at her mom, who was now sitting on the floor, arranging the pillows. She looked at her dad, who was coming back from the pantry, a few extra bottles of water in his arms. They were here. They were safe. And she was here with them. The storm was coming, but they were ready. They were a team, and they would face Hurricane Melissa, together.
