Akeli, with her heart thumping like a trapped bird against her ribs, surveyed the battlefield of the schoolyard. Today, she wasn’t just Akeli; she was Akeli, Aspiring Member of the Popular Elite. Her secret weapon? A brand-new, impossibly bright headscarf, a gift from her aunt in the city, which she’d painstakingly tied in a knot that looked, to her untrained eye, remarkably like the ones Aketch and her clique favored. She’d spent a good hour in front of the cracked village mirror, twisting and tugging, until she was fairly certain she’d nailed the “effortlessly chic” look.

The air buzzed with the usual pre-class cacophony. Laughter, shouts, the rhythmic thud of a football, and the ever-present undercurrent of whispered gossip. Aketch, a whirlwind of confidence and perfectly plaited braids, held court near the mango tree, her followers, a constellation of giggling girls, orbiting her like devoted moons. Akeli took a deep breath, channeling the brave spirit of a warrior entering a lion’s den.

Her first target: a casual saunter past Aketch’s formidable formation. She practiced her nonchalant stride in her head, aiming for a blend of aloofness and approachable cool. What she achieved, however, was closer to a startled gazelle trying to avoid a particularly enthusiastic mosquito. Her feet tangled, her arms flailed, and the headscarf, with a life of its own, decided this was the opportune moment to unravel. It slipped from her head, a splash of vibrant color against the dusty ground, landing squarely at the feet of a very surprised Ojede.
