The midday sun beat down on Amuri Village, a relentless golden fist that made even the shadows sweat. Akeli, perched precariously on the edge of the communal water well, felt it seeping into her very bones. Her skirt, the one Mama had insisted was “smart enough for school,” felt like a wool blanket. Around her, the usual cacophony of Amuri’s afternoon hummed: the rhythmic thud of pestles crushing millet, the distant bleating of goats, the boisterous shouts of children playing a game that involved more chasing than actual rules.

But today, the noise was a dull roar in Akeli’s ears. Her eyes, usually darting with a fierce, almost desperate curiosity, were fixed on a point beyond the village square, a point where the dusty track disappeared into the shimmering heat haze. She’d tried the loud, boisterous laughter of the popular girls, the sharp, dismissive glances, the carefully practiced nonchalance. It had all felt like wearing shoes two sizes too big – clumsy, awkward, and utterly painful. She’d tripped over her own tongue, said the wrong things, and worn the wrong colours. The reflection in the communal mirror, the one that had once seemed to mock her, now felt like a stranger.
