The last box, a sturdy cardboard rectangle filled with Leo’s most treasured toys, sat on the floor of the living room. It was a room that still smelled faintly of old paint and anticipation, a room that felt both familiar and utterly strange. Mommy had just finished tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear, her smile a little tired but still bright. Daddy, on the other hand, seemed to vibrate with an energy that Leo found contagious. He was fiddling with something near the fireplace, his brow furrowed in concentration. Leo watched him, his own gaze drifting to the dark corners of the room, the shadows that seemed to stretch and whisper secrets only he could almost hear. He remembered the tiny treasure box he’d found earlier, the one with the strange symbol etched into its lid. It was still locked tight, a tantalizing puzzle that gnawed at his curiosity.

“Almost there, Leo-bug,” Daddy called out, his voice muffled by the antique wooden cabinet he was examining. “Just one more little mystery to solve before we can officially declare this place ours.”

Leo’s ears perked up. Mystery? His favorite word. He padded over, his small sneakers silent on the polished wood floors. Daddy was kneeling, his fingers tracing the intricate carvings on the cabinet doors. There were tiny little flowers and leaves, and something that looked suspiciously like a very, very small keyhole.
