Leo points out the symbol to Mommy and Daddy. Mommy recalls a similar marking from a childhood book, and Daddy wonders if it's a clue. Together, they examine it, feeling a thrill of discovery in their new home.

The front door, a grand, dark oak that seemed to sigh as it swung inward, had swallowed them whole. Now, standing just inside the entryway, Leo felt a prickle of something new. It wasn't quite fear, not the wobbly kind from the car ride, but a fizzing, electric anticipation. The air inside smelled different, a mix of old wood and something faintly sweet, like dried flowers. Sunlight, thick with dust motes dancing like tiny fairies, streamed through the tall windows, painting stripes across the polished floor.

Mommy let out a soft “Oh, wow,” her voice hushed with a wonder Leo hadn’t heard before. Daddy, ever the adventurer, clapped his hands together, a sound that echoed a little too loudly in the quiet space. “Well now, this is something, isn’t it, Leo?” he boomed, his eyes already scanning the high ceilings and the intricate carvings on the staircase banister.

Leo, however, was drawn to something else. His toes, still tucked into his favorite dinosaur socks, wiggled with a nervous energy. His gaze darted from the vast, empty rooms to the shadows that pooled in the corners, the ones that always seemed to whisper secrets. He’d expected… well, he wasn’t sure *what* he’d expected. A house that looked like a giant, friendly smile? A house with slides instead of stairs? This house was beautiful, yes, but it was also… quiet. Waiting.
