Chapter 5

The Grand, Glorious, and Slightly Singed Contraption

The climax arrives atop the tallest, conveniently accessible building. Ellie and Professor Quibble prepare to unleash their masterpiece: a Rube Goldberg-esque monstrosity designed to reignite the city's power grid. It’s a symphony of dominoes, elaborate pulley systems, and a series of increasingly improbable events, all culminating in a giant spark. The city's perpetually flustered official, Bartholomew 'Barty' Buttercup, arrives just in time to witness the spectacle, convinced it's another layer of the unfolding chaos. With a nervous nod from Ellie and a flourish from the Professor, the contraption begins its majestic, clanky, whirring descent into action. There are near misses, a moment of sheer panic when a rogue pigeon gets involved, and a distinct smell of ozone.

The wind whipped Ellie’s hair across her face, a wild, untamed thing that mirrored the state of her own nerves. She clutched the edge of the rooftop, her knuckles white against the cool metal. Below, the city sprawled, a vast, inky canvas dotted with the faint, flickering glow of a million desperate candles and the occasional, defiant flashlight beam. It was a sight that made her stomach clench, a physical manifestation of the colossal mess she’d made. The toasting incident, as she’d begun to think of it, had escalated from a personal vendetta against her breakfast appliance to a city-wide catastrophe.

“Are you quite sure about this, my dear Ellie?” Professor Quibble’s voice, usually a jovial rumble, was tinged with a nervous excitement that was almost as unsettling as Ellie’s own dread. He stood beside her, a silhouette against the bruised twilight sky, his spectacles glinting like tiny moons. His workshop, usually a symphony of clanks and whirs, had disgorged its most outlandish creation onto this very rooftop, a sprawling, precarious testament to his peculiar genius.

Ellie swallowed, trying to force down the lump of guilt that had taken up permanent residence in her throat. “As sure as I can be, Professor. We have to try. The city… it’s like a giant, grumpy toddler who’s lost its favourite toy.” She gestured vaguely at the darkened metropolis, where the faint honking of frustrated drivers and the distant wail of a siren underscored her analogy. “And I seem to be the one who threw the toy into the abyss.”
